The economic burden of diabetes in the United States in 2007 was estimated to be $174 billion. Hospitalization was the major component, making up 50% of the total. The prevalence of diabetes among hospitalized adults is conservatively estimated to range from 12% to 25%, depending on the thoroughness used to identify patients. Data from 2005 show that almost 6 million hospitalizations had diabetes listed as a diagnosis.
