Incidence of several multidrug-resistant infections in U.S. inpatients declined in recent years

RSV, other viruses associated with severe respiratory disease, length of stay in adult inpatients
Hospital patients with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus, or parainfluenza virus were more likely to require noninvasive or invasive ventilation than general medicine patients who did not test positive for any of those viruses, a national study found.

Among 193 respondents from seven U.S. health care systems, 26.9% of hospital clinicians said they used antibiograms more than once a month and 16.1% did not know that their facility had an antibiogram available.

Nearly half of inpatients with pneumonia or urinary tract infection were overprescribed antibiotics after discharge
The most common types of antibiotic overuse after discharge included excess duration for pneumonia and unnecessary treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria, a retrospective cohort study found.

Hospitalizations for opportunistic infections in HIV declined from 2011 to 2018
While the rate of hospitalization for an opportunistic infection per 100,000 U.S. patients with HIV went down, the associated inpatient mortality rate held stable, at 5.9%, and disparities by age, sex, race, and insurance status were found in a recent study.
