Catheter-directed thrombolysis may improve certain PE outcomes
A study in Taiwan found lower all-cause mortality and recurrence risk in patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) who were treated with catheter-directed versus systemic thrombolysis.

Catheter-directed thrombolysis reduced mortality versus anticoagulation alone in PE
For patients with acute pulmonary embolism, including those at intermediate risk, anticoagulation carried a lower risk of major bleeding than catheter-directed or systemic thrombolysis, a recent review also found.

Two studies offer insight on using age, d-dimer, algorithms for diagnosing PE
For patients with suspected pulmonary embolism (PE), a meta-analysis found that pretest probability-dependent d-dimer thresholds were the most efficient strategy, while a trial found that the YEARS rule with an age-adjusted d-dimer cutoff was noninferior to a conventional strategy.

Guidelines offer 28 recommendations for initial management, secondary prevention of DVT and PE
Among other recommendations, the new guidelines from the American Society of Hematology suggest offering home treatment to low-risk patients with deep venous thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE).

Active strategy to diagnose PE in COPD inpatients did not improve outcomes
A Spanish trial found that using d-dimer testing and, if positive, a CT pulmonary angiogram to diagnose pulmonary embolism (PE) did not affect risk of death, clot, or readmission in patients hospitalized for exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Risk of re-infection, benefits of anticoagulation, cause of sex differences among COVID-19 research
Researchers published evidence of re-infection with SARS-CoV-2, anticoagulation was associated with halved inpatient mortality, recommendations were made on pulmonary embolism in COVID-19, and the authorization for use of remdesivir was expanded.
