Nearly 10% of ED patients meeting Sepsis-3 criteria did not have true infection
Of 812 patients meeting Sepsis-3 criteria in four studied EDs, 79 (9.7%) had only possible infection and 77 (9.5%) were not infected, according to later adjudication of the records by trained nonclinician reviewers.

Initially inappropriate antibiotic therapy lengthens sepsis patients' stay by two days
Nearly one-third of patients with severe sepsis and septic shock attributable to Gram-negative organisms receive inappropriate antibiotic therapy at first, which prolongs their hospital stay by two days on average, a study found.

Metformin during hospitalization associated with improved outcomes in type 2 diabetes and sepsis
In a retrospective cohort study in Pennsylvania, adults with type 2 diabetes and sepsis who were exposed to metformin during hospitalization had lower 90-day mortality and better kidney outcomes than those who were not.

Study of Medicare claims finds good outcomes with hospital at home
Only 6.2% of Medicare fee-for-service patients who were hospitalized at home had to be escalated to another setting and 0.5% died during the admission, according to an analysis of 2022 to 2023 claims data. Their 30-day readmission rate was 15.6%.
