An analysis of hospitalized patients found that those who used methamphetamine had a 32% increase in cardiovascular disease risk compared to nonusers who also had been hospitalized. Risk increases associated with misuse of alcohol and cocaine were 28% and 47%, respectively.

Inpatient diagnosis of atrial fibrillation associated with lower use of anticoagulation
Ninety days after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, 51.6% of patients diagnosed in the ED were on oral anticoagulants, compared to 50.9% of those diagnosed in the hospital and 67.9% of those diagnosed as outpatients, a Canadian study found.

Postop atrial fibrillation carries same stroke risk as other new-onset atrial fibrillation
Patients who first developed atrial fibrillation within 30 days of surgery were less likely to be prescribed an anticoagulant, despite similar risks of stroke and transient ischemic attack as other patients with atrial fibrillation, a study found.

LMWH may offer best risk-benefit profile for thromboprophylaxis in medical inpatients
A meta-analysis found that an intermediate dose of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) had the most favorable balance of risk and harms during hospitalization for acute illness, while unfractionated heparin and direct oral anticoagulants had the least.

Flying thrombectomy teams faster than transferring stroke patients
The median time from the decision to pursue endovascular thrombectomy to the start of the procedure was 58 minutes in patients who received thrombectomy from interventionists deployed to them by helicopter and 148 minutes in patients transferred to the hospital, a German study found.

For ACS patients, risk of repeat event high immediately after discharge
A follow-up analysis of patients hospitalized for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) found a greater than 40% risk of nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal ischemic stroke, or cardiovascular death shortly after discharge, compared to a risk of only about 6% per year after one year.
