Hospital addiction medicine consults less likely among Black patients, study finds
In a retrospective study at an urban U.S. safety-net hospital, patients with substance use disorder were less likely to have an order placed for addiction medicine consultation if they were Black than if they were White, and Black patients who did receive an order were less likely to be seen.

AHA offers guiding principles to treat infective endocarditis in patients who inject drugs
In patients who inject drugs, management of infective endocarditis without addiction treatment “is failing to treat the underlying cause of illness, an ideal that is a principal tenet in all other medical conditions,” the American Heart Association (AHA) said in a scientific statement.

Meth use associated with higher risk of heart failure, myocardial infarction, stroke
An analysis of hospitalized patients found that those who used methamphetamine had a 32% increase in cardiovascular disease risk compared to nonusers who also had been hospitalized. Risk increases associated with misuse of alcohol and cocaine were 28% and 47%, respectively.

New heart failure indication for SGLT-2 inhibitor
