‘Patient navigator’ intervention reduces readmissions among older but not younger high-risk safety-net patients
Older patients who were cared for at safety-net hospitals and were at high risk for readmission had lower 30-day readmission rates if they received coaching and assistance from community health workers acting as patient navigators, but the same benefits were not seen among younger patients, a new study found.

Migraine may be linked to perioperative stroke, hospital readmission
The researchers calculated a predicted absolute risk of 2.4 perioperative ischemic strokes for every 1,000 surgical patients overall, 3.9 for every 1,000 patients with migraine but no aura, and 6.3 for every 1,000 patients with migraine and aura.

Longer antibiotic therapy in patients with low procalcitonin during COPD exacerbation increased LOS without reducing readmissions
The retrospective study divided patients by whether they received inpatient antibiotics for more or less than a day, and patients in the former group had a length of stay (LOS) of 3.7 days compared to 2.8 days in the latter.*

Study of Medicare claims finds good outcomes with hospital at home
Only 6.2% of Medicare fee-for-service patients who were hospitalized at home had to be escalated to another setting and 0.5% died during the admission, according to an analysis of 2022 to 2023 claims data. Their 30-day readmission rate was 15.6%.
