Hospitalizations for opportunistic infections in HIV declined from 2011 to 2018
While the rate of hospitalization for an opportunistic infection per 100,000 U.S. patients with HIV went down, the associated inpatient mortality rate held stable, at 5.9%, and disparities by age, sex, race, and insurance status were found in a recent study.

Hospitals with higher proportion of Black patients hit with value-based Medicare penalties
Mortality rates for myocardial infarction and pneumonia were consistently higher at hospitals that treated a high proportion of Black patients, and that didn't change after implementation of Medicare's value-based payment program, a 10-year study found.

Milestone ratings system reduced bias against some underrepresented residents
Switching from the Resident Annual Evaluation Summary to the Milestone ratings system reduced bias for some groups that are underrepresented in medicine. However, substantial bias continued for U.S.-born Black residents.

Short-term dual antiplatelet therapy underused after mild stroke, study finds
While prescriptions of dual antiplatelet therapy after mild noncardioembolic stroke increased from 25.7% in 2010 to 52.8% in 2022 in 168 Florida hospitals, underuse remained common, especially in women and non-Hispanic Black patients.

Study analyzes sex differences worldwide in patients hospitalized for heart failure
Data from 44 countries in REPORT-HF found that in all geographic regions women in the hospital with heart failure were less likely to receive diagnostic tests or guideline-directed care than men.

White patients less likely to get amputation, revascularization for critical limb ischemia
Black patients hospitalized with critical limb ischemia had the highest odds of nonroutine discharge after treatment, and Black, Hispanic, and Asian and Pacific Islander patients all had higher odds of revascularization and amputation than White patients.
