Personalized steroid dose more effective than fixed dose in COPD exacerbations
Treatment failure was less common among hospitalized patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who received personalized corticosteroid therapy, guided by a dosing scale, than in those who received a 40-mg/d fixed dose of prednisolone or the equivalent, a Chinese study found.

Urine sodium excretion associated with six-month mortality in hospitalized heart failure patients

Study analyzes sex differences worldwide in patients hospitalized for heart failure

Heart failure questionnaire a month after discharge identifies high-risk MI patients
Patients who reported very poor to fair health on the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire a month after hospitalization for a myocardial infarction (MI) had significantly higher risk of mortality than those reporting better health, with predictive symptoms including leg swelling.

Higher ACS mortality in women vs. men may be related to acute heart failure
A retrospective study of 87,812 patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) found that those with acute heart failure were more likely to die and that women were more likely to present with acute heart failure than men.

Screening patients, visitors, staff at hospital entrances didn't catch much COVID-19
Of nearly 1 million individuals screened for COVID-19 symptoms or exposure at entrances of a U.S. academic medical center from March 17, 2020, to May 8, 2021, fewer than 0.1% had a failed screening. The estimated cost to identify one screening failure was $2,351.

Experts recommend criteria for referring heart failure patients to palliative care
The 25 criteria selected by a group of international experts were divided into six categories: advanced/refractory heart failure, comorbidities, and complications; advanced therapies; hospital utilization; prognosis; symptom burden/distress; and decision making/social support.

Medications that can exacerbate heart failure often continued despite heart failure hospitalization
