Midline catheters may be safer than PICCs for short-term use
A retrospective cohort study found use of a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) for difficult vascular access or for IV antibiotic therapy for 30 days or less was associated with higher risk for a bloodstream infection or occlusion than a midline catheter.

Midline safe alternative to PICC for OPAT after discharge, retrospective study finds
In patients getting outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) for two weeks or less, major complication rates were lower with midline catheters than peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). For longer dwell times, complication and failure rates were similar between devices.

PICCs frequently placed in hospital patients with chronic kidney disease
Despite recommendations cautioning against PICC use in chronic kidney disease or intensive care, 30.9% of ICU patients who got a PICC had an estimated glomerular filtration rate less than 45 mL/min/1.73 m2, a study in Michigan found.
