Ventilation helmets didn't reduce need for respiratory support in COVID-19 patients
ICU patients with COVID-19 respiratory failure who were randomized to ventilation by helmet did have a lower rate of endotracheal intubation than those given high-flow oxygen, an Italian trial found.

COVID-19 research looks at aspirin, disparities, long-term outcomes
Recent aspirin use may be associated with improved COVID-19 outcomes, and hospitals had widely differing mortality rates in April 2020. Half of discharged patients reported ongoing symptoms at four months, and most ICU patients showed evidence of impairments at one month, new studies found.

COVID-19 and obesity, AKI, DKA, antibiotics, symptom checkers, hospital prep
Acute kidney injury (AKI) and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) were worse with COVID-19, antibiotics were overused, and an online symptom checker didn't triage safely, but most hospitals had enough ICU beds and preprocedural COVID-19 testing showed that vaccinations reduced asymptomatic infections.

NIH revises tocilizumab guidance, research details vaccine reactions, alcohol use during pandemic
The NIH recommended tocilizumab for some COVID-19 patients. A case series described delayed skin reactions to vaccination, and randomized trials indicated that ivermectin, azithromycin, and convalescent plasma didn't help mildly ill patients. Several studies focused on alcohol use during the pandemic.

Research shows mixed findings on tocilizumab, offers prognostic strategies in COVID-19
One trial of IL-6 inhibitors found improved survival among patients on organ support, while another found no difference in rates of recovery with tocilizumab versus placebo. An online calculator offered a new score for predicting progression of COVID-19, and a study categorized patients into three phenotypes.

FDA authorizes new vaccine, NIH announces research into ‘long COVID’
The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine got an emergency use authorization, and an Israeli study provided more data on the Pfizer vaccine. The NIH named long-term symptoms as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC).

Studies look at new and old scores, biomarkers for predicting COVID-19 outcomes
The SOFA score did not perform well for predicting mortality in patients admitted with COVID-19, multiple recent studies found, but levels of d-dimer and C-reactive protein had prognostic value, according to the latest research.

New COVID-19 treatment, monitoring, isolation guidance
The Infectious Diseases Society of America newly suggested tocilizumab for some patients, while the CDC offered guidance on isolation duration for immunocompromised patients and pulse oximetry accuracy and published safety data on the currently available vaccines. Recent studies looked at vitamin D and anticoagulation in COVID-19.
