Death, rehospitalization risk high after first heart failure hospitalization, study finds

Observation has highest utility, lowest cost of options for primary spontaneous pneumothorax
A review comparing strategies for primary spontaneous pneumothorax found that chest tube and aspiration were more likely to result in resolution of the condition without additional intervention, but patients who underwent observation instead had the shortest length of stay.

Nurse-led care transitions program for rural veterans didn't decrease overall costs
While the change in overall 30-day health care costs after hospitalization did not differ between participants and controls, program enrollees had a significantly smaller increase in inpatient costs and a significantly larger increase in outpatient costs from before hospitalization to after.

Study finds low adherence to price transparency mandate across U.S. hospitals
As of Jan. 1, 2021, a federal rule requires hospitals to disclose five types of standard charges for all services and to provide a consumer-friendly display for at least 300 services. Six to nine months after it went into effect, more than half of hospitals had met neither requirement.

OPAT has similar safety, lower costs versus inpatient antibiotic therapy
Patients receiving outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) after hospitalization for bacterial infection had 90-day adverse event rates of 35.6% compared to 39.0% in those who stayed in the hospital for parenteral antimicrobial therapy, a retrospective Canadian study found.

Nurse-led mobile EKG monitoring in the hospital appears cost-effective after initial stroke
