Among persons who inject drugs who were hospitalized with complicated Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections, those who received oral antibiotics after an incomplete IV antibiotic course were significantly less likely to experience microbiologic failure or death than patients discharged without oral antibiotics.

Behavioral symptoms associated with poor outcomes in hospitalized patients with dementia
A cross-sectional retrospective study of elderly U.S. inpatients found that behavioral symptoms of dementia were associated with higher in-hospital mortality, longer length of stay, higher rates of 30-day readmission, and lower likelihood of discharge to home.

Electronic tool for ICU-to-ward discharge linked to timely, complete discharge summaries
A Canadian study of adult patients discharged from the ICU to a hospital ward found that the proportion of those with timely and complete discharge summaries increased from 10.8% to 71.1% after implementation of a structured electronic discharge summary tool.

Providing clinicians with prognostic data did not affect heart failure care

Readmission penalties didn't improve COPD exacerbation care
The percentage of patients hospitalized with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who received recommended care increased at a rate of 0.16% per month before implementation of the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program compared to 0.01% per month in the four years after.

Ultrashort antibiotics for pneumonia may work for patients with preserved oxygenation
In hospitalized patients with pneumonia and oxygen saturations of 95% or greater without supplemental oxygen, outcomes were similar with one to two versus five to eight days of antibiotics, leading the authors of a recent study to suggest use of oxygenation levels to identify candidates for early discontinuation.
